“Dawson’s Creek” Co-Stars Pay Tribute to James Van Der Beek

Members of the “Dawson’s Creek” cast are mourning James Van Der Beek, who died this week at age 48. As tributes began appearing, his former co-stars emphasized the personal relationships that endured long after filming ended. Their reflections highlighted warmth, humor, and loyalty alongside professional admiration.

Best known for portraying Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek became one of the most recognizable faces of late-1990s television. The series connected him to a generation of young viewers navigating similar coming-of-age questions. His passing has left a noticeable void among friends, collaborators, and audiences alike.

Katie Holmes Reflects on a “Hero”

Instagram | accesshollywood | Katie Holmes mourned her “hero” costar James Van Der Beek with a heartfelt note.

Katie Holmes, who starred opposite Van Der Beek as Joey Potter, described his death as “a lot to process.” In a handwritten note, she remembered him as a “hero,” expressing both sorrow and gratitude.

“I mourn this loss with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint on it,” Holmes wrote.

She also addressed Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, in a separate paragraph, promising she would always “be there to shower you with Love and Compassion.” In the caption of her post, Holmes added, “I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James’ journey. He is beloved.”

Her tribute captured the weight of the moment while honoring the impact he had on those closest to him.

Busy Philipps: “One in a Billion”

Busy Philipps, who joined “Dawson’s Creek” in its fifth season, shared a heartfelt message alongside a photo of Van Der Beek.

She said her “heart is deeply hurting” for “every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness, especially his parents, brother, and sister.”

Philipps wrote, “James Van Der Beek was one in a billion and he will be forever missed and i don’t know what else to say. i am just so so sad. He was my friend, and I loved him, and I’m so grateful for our friendship all these years.”

Her words highlighted both the personal loss and the wider circle of people affected by his death.

Chad Michael and Mary Margaret

Chad Michael Murray, who also joined the series in Season 5, said Van Der Beek “inspired all of us.” He added, “His words, art, and humanity inspired all of us — he inspired us to be better in all ways.”

Mary Margaret Humes, who portrayed Dawson’s mother on the show, remembered him as a “gracious warrior” who “fought a hard battle against all odds with such quiet strength and dignity.”

Together, these tributes reflected admiration for his resilience during his illness.

Illness, Fundraising, and Health Risks

In November 2024, Van Der Beek announced he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and was undergoing treatment. His official cause of death has not been shared.

Colorectal cancer has become a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Americans under 50. Cases in that age group have increased in recent years, drawing attention from medical professionals nationwide.

During his treatment, Van Der Beek auctioned memorabilia from throughout his career to help cover medical expenses. A GoFundMe campaign shared by his family has raised over $1.3 million. Busy Philipps and Chad Michael Murray both amplified the fundraiser in their posts.

James Van Der Beek’s impact extended beyond “Dawson’s Creek.” His co-stars’ tributes reflect a career defined by creativity, generosity, and connection. At 48, his life ended too soon, yet the memories shared by friends and colleagues continue to honor the man they describe as “one in a billion.”
